As I walked on the campus of where we were staying on a hot Spring Break day, I instantly knew that this was the place to be. It was located in one of the poorest areas of South Carolina and people that lived there had the biggest heart's anyone could have. Even though these people were poor, they were treated with great respect and dignity, just as any human being should. I was first nervous when I saw the people because they weren't like me, and they dressed differently, looked differently, but I soon realized that were just like me and all others in the world. Soon as I grasped that, I straightned up and loved them like never before because I wouldnt want to be treated as such.
Human Dignity is very important to the people of Rural Mission. They believe that all people have the right to get respect and a second chance. When they were in need of something, the people got it very quickly, if they were hurt at our site, we helped them, if they wanted to talk, we talked to them, and most important, when they felt non-worthy of our help, we helped them realize their worth and that it was our pleasure to help them. Rural Mission, teaches its' workers Hunman Dignity and respect for others. For some, it was hard to understand and it was difficult to get where these people were coming from, but as one unit, we were able to help all the families and have great fun at the end of our long busy days. This taught me more about human dignity and self worth, and lastly, how I treat those who arent the same as me.
